This is our tutorial on how to install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox for OS X.
Instructions
Here is a list of what you need before we begin:
1. An OS X computer (DUHHHHH)
2. The original Windows 3.1 install disks and a USB floppy drive. I will NOT provide a download link for the 3.1 disks, as that would be illegal. Sorry, guys.
3. DOSBox 0.73 for OS X. Download it here.
Now, here's the steps in order on what to do.
1. Make sure you have downloaded DOSBox and have placed DOSBox.app in your "Applications" folder. None of the other items in the DMG are necessary.
2. Now, load all of the data on all six of your Windows 3.1 install disks into one folder on the ROOT OF YOUR HARD DRIVE, and title that folder "winsetup".
3. Now make an empty folder titled "w31" that is also in the root of your hard drive. This folder will become your C: drive for Windows 3.1.
4. Here comes the fun part! Open up the DOSBox.app from your Applications folder.
5. Now, type in the following- "mount a /winsetup"
6. Press the enter key.
7. Now, type in- "mount c /w31" and then press the enter key.
8. Type in- "a:" and then press the enter key.
9. And finally, type "setup" and press enter.
10. This begins the Windows setup program. Press enter.
11. Press enter again for the express setup.
12. Wait for it to finish loading, and then enter your name and press "continue".
13. When this is finished loading, select "Generic / Text Only" for your printer. Windows requires at least a printer installed to display some fonts, even if you don't have a printer attached.
14. Select "LPT1".
15. Congratulations! You've installed Windows 3.1! To boot into Windows, open up DOSBox, type in "mount c /w31" and press enter, then type in "c:" and press enter, then "cd windows" and press enter, then finally type "win" and press enter.
