This is our tutorial on how to increase Windows 3.1 resolution in DOSBox
This is a tutorial on how to install the et4000 drivers into Windows 3.1 in DOSBox for Mac OS X.
Put simply, this will let you have a maximum resolution of 1024x768 with 256 colors or 1280x1024 with 16 colors.
The default resolution of Windows 3.1 running in DOSBox for OS X is 640x480 16 colors (VGA) and is by default only expandable to 800x600, again with only 16 colors (SVGA).
This tutorial is based loosely on (well, see link in description) but I found the "drivers" section of that webpage unclear so I decided to make a video tutorial that walks the audience through every step.
Here is a list of what you need before we begin:
1. An OS X computer (DUHHHHH)
2. Windows 3.1 already installed in DOSBox on your computer. If you haven't done this yet, click here for instructions.
3. The et4000 monitor drivers. Download them here.
4. If you used the boot IMG method for installing Windows instead of running the setup program in DOSBox, you most likely won't be able to use this tutorial. Look elsewhere.
5. And finally, you need to give this video a five star rating because this video was awesome and helpful (but mostly awesome).
6. By the way, if you're confused about something in this video, don't be afraid to ask for help.
Before we begin, I will show you what Windows 3.1 looks like in 640x480 with 16 colors. You should see a significant change when this tutorial is completed.
Now, here's the steps in order on what to do.
1. The et4000 monitor drivers. Download them here.
2. Navigate to your DOSBox C: drive. (This is the folder that contains the "WINDOWS" folder and all of your Windows components and programs). For us, and if you used our "How to install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox for Mac OS X" tutorial, the C: drive is titled "w31".
3. You will also need a copy of the Windows 3.1 SETUP DISKS on your hard drive. I will not provide these. I have all of these in one folder, titled "winsetup".
4. Extract the w31et4.zip to your DOSBox C: drive. At this point, you should have two things:
5. A) All of the ET4000 drivers extracted and moved to your C: DOSBox drive, in a folder titled "w31et4".
6. B) The Windows 3.1 setup disks on your hard drive.
7. Now, go to your user name. My computer user name is "Nick". Navigate to /Library/Preferences/DOSBox 0.73 Preferences (or wherever your Dosbox conf is located).
8. Under the [dosbox] tab, change "machine=svga_s3" to "machine=svga_et4000".
9. Now open up DOSBox but DO NOT BOOT WINDOWS 3.1 JUST YET!!!!!!!!!
10. Mount your C: drive with the "w31et4" folder that you added earlier. The mount command is "mount C /(insert folder location here)" if you are using a Mac.
11. Mount your Windows setup disk folder as A:. This is done using the "mount A /(location of setup folders)" command.
12. 7.Type "C:". This changes the drive.
13. Type "cd windows" and then "setup". This launches Windows Setup.
14. Use the "return/enter" and arrow keys to scroll up to "Display: VGA", press enter, and then scroll to the bottom of the list. Select "Other (Requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer)..."
15. Type in "C:\w31et4"
16. Now, select the monitor type you want. Anything that begins with "ET4000" should work. Now press "enter", and when prompted, make sure the Windows 3.1 setup disk folder is set to A:. If it begins automatically, like what just happened, your setup disks are set to drive A: from the mount A command earlier.
17. Congratulations! The next time you boot into Windows 3.1, you will be able to display a much larger screen with up to 256 colors!
